Shitakes for All | Week of March 18, 2013 |
Fresh & LocalWhich market product is a great source of iron; high in three kinds of vitamin B; and a hearty & delicious addition to any meal? Shitake mushrooms from Mississippi Natural Products, of course! Not only does Mississippi Natural sell fresh and dried mushrooms (as well as mushroom seasoning), they are also a rural farmers co-op providing an alternative crop for farmers, which adds value by through marketing and selling at markets, grocery stores and even online. |
Pick of the Week: Beef & PorkAs the weather warms, it's time to dust off the grill and plan a backyard cookout! Heritage breed farmer and Saturday market vendor Justin Pitts has a good selection of beef and pork cuts while they last - ground beef for burgers, maybe a few T-bones and ribeyes, pork chops and much more, including breakfast meats. Just in case we have another cold snap, pick up some boneless stew meat, a roast or seven steaks (ask Justin about this cut) for braising. |
Tuesday’s Green Plate SpecialJoin us for a delightful lunch by Heritage Grill this Tuesday. On the menu: crawfish bisque, Cuban mojo pork chops on a brussels sprout salad and oatmeal raisin pecan cookies. |
Recipe of the WeekWho doesn’t like wild caught catfish? Pick some up at the market from vendors Pete and Clara’s Seafood or Des Allemands Outlaw Katfish this week! This recipe by Chef Michelle McRaney of Mr. B’s Bistro is a delicious twist on the French classic Trout Meuniere using local ingredients such as pecans and wild caught catfish. |
