Care for some honey, sugar? | Week of August 5, 2013 |
Fresh & LocalAugust 4-11 is National Farmers Market week! This week we celebrate all that markets, both locally and nationally, have to offer. By the end of 2012, there were more than 7,800 farmers markets in the U.S—that’s a 10% increase in just one year! Here in New Orleans, we have been proud to be a part of the community for nearly 18 years. Join us this week for tastings, raffles, and more this week at all three of our markets. For more information about National Farmers Market week, visit Farmers Market Coalition's website, chock-full of great information. |
Pick of the Week: Honey! In addition to being a delicious sweetener, honey is high in antioxidants, Vitamin B and minerals. Honey is also a great natural source of energy, and sweeter than table sugar. Try adding honey to your yogurt, over a biscuit, in your morning coffee or tea, or added to your favorite dessert. We have heard at least one of our vendors praising honey for it's use as a beauty aid. Is there anything honey isn't good for? Bees pollinate over 30% of the food that we eat, and are rapidly declining, so support your local beekeepers as they support the tiny workers who help us eat! |
Tuesday’s Green Plate SpecialThis month we welcome chef Ryan Hughes’ Purloo to the Green Plate Special tent. Look forward to Creole tomato, goat cheese, and roasted vegetable quiche, arugula and cantaloupe salad with pickled watermelon rind, and an allspice vinaigrette, grilled summer corn with lime, cojita cheese & chiles, and refreshing watermelon and basil sodas. You can find Purloo this Friday night at the Creole Gardens Guest House and Inn, 1415 Prytania, for a Alabama inspired dinner. For more details, check out Purloo’s facebook page. |
Recipe of the WeekWe are seeing apples pop-up at market on our peach vendors tables and we are thrilled. Pair market fresh apples with jumbo shrimp from our fantastic seafood vendors and Mizell Farms’ basil for Grilled Shrimp and Apple Skewers that are apple-utely the best! |
