Freezes, fresh foods, and feisty herbs! | Week of January 13, 2014

Fresh & Local

Last week’s freezing weather was a good reminder of the impact of weather on farming and eating locally. Many of our CCFM vendors saw crop damage and loss, and are still in the process of assessing field damage. Despite this setback, most vendors will be at market and ready to sell! You may see less citrus and a few fewer produce vendors for a short time, but we anticipate being back up to our normal levels in a few short weeks. In the meantime, come support our hardworking vendors and keep your fridge and pantry stocked with a market visit this week!

Pick of the Week: Galangal!

This cousin of ginger is a staple in Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese cooking, and is a tasty addition to any stir fry or curry. Galangal is an herb in the rhizome family and is known for it’s many health benefits, including settling upset stomach, reducing inflammation, and increasing circulation. While this tasty tuber is called for in many recipes, finding it fresh is a challenge...until now! Vintage Garden Farms is growing it, as well as turmeric and ginger, and has fresh pieces at our Tuesday and Thursday markets. Stop by their table to try a piece this week and add some flavor and health to your diet! Check out this fantastic recipe for fresh strawberry and galangal soda from The Indolent Cook for quick inspiration and a tasty way to use this zesty root.

Tuesday’s Green Plate Special

Hillel’s Kitchen kept us warm and fed with their tasty menu items and sweet hot chocolate. This week they keep up the trend with your choice of falafel in pita with israeli salad, or a rice bowl with curried veggies or lentils. Warm up with a cup of hot chai tea and celebrate carnival season with a slice of their special kosher king cake, a King David Cake! Tulane and Loyola students, faculty and staff, don’t forget about the free shuttle available to bring you to market’s doorstep.
