Is it Spring yet? | Week of February 17, 2014

Fresh & Local

Our friends and wonderful Saturday vendors at Grow Dat Youth Farm are getting ready to start their Spring Farm Share! For 15 weeks, from March 15th - June 21st, they’ll be boxing up fresh veggies and herbs every week for those who sign-up as members. The weekly produce boxes will be available for members to pick up every Saturday at their farm site in City Park from 9am-12pm, and all proceeds will go towards supporting their youth leadership program. There’s a limited number of memberships available so make sure to sign up soon! To sign-up or learn more about the great work that’s being done over at Grow Dat Youth Farm, check out their website.

Pick of the Week: Brussels sprouts!

This sure has been a chilly winter, but that’s not stopping these little guys. These members of the cabbage family are actually best when the weather outside is chilly. So, there’s no better time to grab a basket of these little bulbs and start reaping the benefits they’ll bring not only to your pallet but to your health. Did you know that the glucosinolates found in brussels sprouts are commonly linked to the prevention of cancer? That’s all we need to hear! You can grab brussels sprouts at our Tuesday markets from the Monica Family or Saturdays from Happy Oak Farms or Colt Clemmons.

Tuesday’s Green Plate Special

We have been so impressed with Hillel’s Kitchen’s delicious market fresh lunches each week. This week grab a falafel pita with Israeli salad (a staff favorite!), or a cup of roasted tomato soup for lunch. Looking for something lighter or a quick bite? Their banana bread and hot chai tea is also fantastic!

Recipe of the Week

Brussels Sprouts might not seem like your ideal veggie to eat raw, but trust us, you won’t look at them the same way after trying this Shaved Brussel Sprout Salad recipe! It’s light, flavorful, and an interesting change up from your usual salad. Add some cherry tomatoes or sliced strawberries for a market fresh treat.
