Embrace Summer with CCFM! | August 25, 2014

Fresh & Local

Temperatures may be high, but spirits are too at CCFM as we embrace the heat of summer! Now’s the time to celebrate and enjoy the wonderful summer bounties available at market. For those of you who have been coming out or are familiar with our growing season down here, you know that means lots of tomatoes, okra, eggplant, and all kinds of peppers! While it’s true that we miss our beloved leafy greens, we know they’ll be coming in soon with Fall weather, and we’re happy to enjoy what the summer weather brings to market while we have it. Changing our menus according to the seasons is one of the most exciting parts of shopping at the market and eating locally. So embrace the heat and come get your fill of the bountiful summer produce available at all three markets!

pick of the week

Pick of the Week: Okra!

Summer crops are in abundance at market right now, including one of our favorite southern staples, okra. This green, slimy, and often misunderstood vegetable can be found on menus all over town, but folks are often at a loss about how to prepare it for themselves. Besides just frying them up or tossing them into your next gumbo, there are many ways to cook up okra. Try throwing them on the grill until slightly charred and drizzling them with lemon, pickling them for an anytime quick addition to your meal, or roasting them with olive oil for a healthy side dish. Did you know that okra is a highly recommended food for pregnant women? Okra contains high levels of folic acid which is important in the formation of neural tubes in the fetus and can work to prevent birth defects. It’s versatile, healthy, and culturally relevant to us Southerners. Could you ask for more from a veggie?

Tuesday’s Green Plate Special

This Tuesday is Breads On Oak’s last week with us as our August Green Plate Special! To all those who have yet to try their ricotta tart, cool summer gazpacho, or delicious vegan baked treats, be sure to come on out before they’re gone or check them out at their storefront at 8640 Oak St. in the Riverbend. Stay tuned for more tasty vegetarian and vegan cuisine from Seed, our GPS vendors for the month of September!
