Director of Programs

Position Title: Director of Programs

Status: Full Time, salaried. FLSA status: exempt. Some evenings and weekend hours are required. Outdoor market work required.

Salary: $60,000-$70,000 annual salary range.

Benefits: Paid holidays and Paid Time Off. Health and dental insurance (Market Umbrella funds 75%); vision, life, AD&D and short term disability insurance (Market Umbrella funds 100%). 401K retirement plan (up to 4% Market Umbrella annual match). FSA (125 plan) and HSA: eligible on the following month after a 1 month waiting period.

About Market Umbrella:

Market Umbrella is a 25-year-old community non-profit that operates the Crescent City Farmers Markets, provides community education related to nutrition and healthy eating, and offers a robust array of food access programs. Our work supports Southeast Louisiana foodways and culture, serves as a small business incubator and supporter of the local economy, and provides food access programs to help all New Orleanians have greater access to fresh, local foods. The Crescent City Farmers Market operates weekly farmers markets in the New Orleans area, hosting over 60 local small farmers, fishers, and food producers, and more than 100,000 shoppers annually. While the pandemic has shifted the market experience, Market Umbrella has pivoted around new approaches for engaging the community, including walk-up and drive-thru markets, at-home food box delivery, and food access programming.

General Position Description:

This full-time staff member is responsible for implementing and expanding programming of Market Umbrella and the Crescent City Farmers Market. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Programs supervises the Programs Manager, as well as volunteers and interns.

The breakdown of responsibilities will be roughly as follows:

70% Programs Management

The Director of Programs works to provide programming focused on topics critical to Market Umbrella’s key priorities including supporting regional foodways, local food access, nutrition education, small business development and entrepreneurship, addressing environmental concerns, and the local economy. Specific programs currently include: Market Match, Market Mommas Club, Farmers Market Nutrition Program and Meet Me at the Market. The Director of Programs is responsible for:

  • Ensuring programmatic consistency and adherence to grant requirements.
  • Managing data collection on all programming for comprehensive reporting to the Board of Directors, funders, and other key stakeholders.
  • Leading the Market Match SNAP incentive program and working to increase monthly SNAP transactions at all CCFMs through curriculum implementation and partner collaboration, including SNAP-Education activities such as market tours, cooking demos, tastings, recipe development, budgeting and storage tips, etc.
  • Managing the WIC Market Mommas Club breastfeeding incentive program, offering the program to mothers and mothers-to-be enrolled in the Louisiana Medicaid program in conjunction with other community partners.
  • Overseeing partnerships and outreach to increase utilization of the Farmers Market Nutrition Program for both Seniors and WIC shoppers, including the coordination of pop-up markets to encourage redemption.
  • Leading Meet Me at the Market activities at our markets including outreach, scheduling, surveying, curriculum development/revision, partner communications, and overseeing and performing classroom visits including preparing and gathering materials and activities.
  • Actively supporting the development of new programming and the expansion of existing programming to ensure relevance and impact for participants.
  • Collaborating on marketing of programs and community outreach to raise awareness of Market Umbrella’s programming including social benefit currencies (FMNP, WIC, SNAP, Marketeers) and other incentive programs as well as SNAP acceptance at markets.
  • Serving as organizational point of contact for programmatic partners.

20% Supervision

  • Supervising Programs Manager to ensure consistent execution of programming and adherence to grant requirements.
  • Providing guidance and support Programs Manager’s professional development.
  • Co-implementing programming with the Programs Manager when needed.
  • Recruiting and supervising programmatic interns and volunteers.

5% Senior Leadership Team

  • Serving as a member of the MU senior leadership team, working closely with the Executive Director, Director of Markets, Development Director, and Finance Director on execution of the organization’s strategic vision, grant applications, and program budgets and execution.
  • Reporting regularly to the Board of Directors and attending board meetings.

5% Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

Minimum Qualifications:

At least four years of professional work experience and previous supervisory responsibilities required. A bachelor’s degree is required; Masters Degree or experience in public health, education, public or nonprofit administration, agriculture or social work a plus. Spanish and/or Vietnamese language skills a plus. Some professional work experience in nutrition program education and/or food access, particularly with vulnerable populations, strongly preferred.

Experience with working with a wide variety of people in a professional context, deadline-oriented self-starter, detail oriented, effective written communications skills. Staff are currently working remotely, but in future an ability to work in an open-office environment with a highly collaborative team is required. Some time spent working outdoors at farmers markets, year round, rain or shine, is required. Ability to lift 40 lb.s repeatedly, and maintain a positive customer service attitude.

Must have reliable transportation. This position is generally a Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm position, but some evenings and weekends will be required. Program-related work often occurs at farmers markets, which often occur during evenings and weekends.
