Have an Egg-cellent Easter! | April 15, 2019

Fresh & Local:

Have an Egg-cellent Easter!

Decorating eggs in preparation for Easter is a tradition for many, not to mention tons of fun for the family. There are all types of decorative kits at the store these days – glitter, decals, stamps… but did you know that you can source your coloring ingredients from the market? That’s right! Beautiful, locally-sourced, natural egg dye is available straight from the farm. The dense pigments from your favorite veggies like cabbage, beets, and onions are perfect for egg painting. Coffee and hibiscus are also good to use for those looking for a variety of choices. Check out this how-to guide from The Kitchn for these color possibilities:

Naturally Dyed Easter Eggs Color Combos

  • chopped purple cabbage = blue on white eggs, green on brown eggs
  • red onion skins = lavender or red eggs
  • yellow onion skins = orange on white eggs, rusty red on brown eggs
  • shredded beets = pink on white eggs, maroon on brown eggs
  • ground turmeric = yellow eggs

Picks of the Week:

New Orleans Public Library at the Market

We love our community partners and especially love when they come visit us at the market. This week, you’ll find the New Orleans Public Library at the Wednesday Bywater market with a table full of books. The library uses a mobile check out system when they are at the market, which allows you to check out books directly from them and then return to any NOLA public library when you’re finished reading. They’ll have lots of books about farming, gardening, and cooking for you to peruse, and around 4pm they’ll have story time in the grass for kids. If you can’t make it this week, they’ll be back on May 1st and May 15th.

Crescent City Classic

The Crescent City Classic 10k road race is held every year on the Saturday before Easter. The course begins downtown in front of the Superdome, wraps through the French Quarter, then proceeds all the way up Esplanade to City Park. This year, the race will be held on Saturday, April 20th. Expect Poydras, North Peters, Decatur, and Esplanade to be closed for the first half of the day. Make sure to plan accordingly when making your way to the Downtown market on Saturday morning.

Vendor of the Week:

Monica’s Okra World

Have you seen this new face popping up at market? Meet Sam- the Monica’s son! The Monica’s 150-acre farm (currently farming 50 acres) is located up the river in St. James Parish, where the sweet creole soil runs deep in their veins. Christine Monica has been doing this since she was in 5th grade, following the footsteps of her father who made sugarcane farming his life’s work. Find Christine and children Jessica and Sam at all of our weekly markets, Tuesday through Saturday, with a wide variety of produce for your Easter dinner and egg dying rituals.

Tuesday’s Green Plate Special:
