New Faces at the Market | July 23, 2024

Fresh & Local:

New Faces at the Market

While life tends to slow down during a typical New Orleans summer, the market is proving the opposite! The Sunday City Park Market has continually broken records for number of daily patrons - and we have onboarded lots of new vendors across all three markets. Be sure to say hi to all the new faces you’re seeing out there!

Bayou Sarah Farms (Sunday City Park Market)
A regenerative farm that produces grass fed water buffalo meat and tallow balm, pasture raised eggs, all natural organic blueberries, and honey.

Crisp Farms (Sunday City Park Market)
Urban farm focusing on subtropical fruit tree starters, perennial vegetables, leguminous plants, and natives.

Delightful Merriment (Sunday City Park Market)
Crawfish and Shrimp pies served frozen to cook at home.

Fat Cat Farm (Sunday City Park Market)
1-acre (and growing) small scale specialty produce and cut flower farm using organic fertilizer and low-till growing practices.

Rose Wagon Ranch (Sunday City Park Market)
Multi-generational farming family with seasonal produce, chicken and quail eggs, microgreens, herbs, edible flowers and an array of value-added goods including microgreen powders, dehydrated mirepoix, and flavored vinegars.

The Snoball Lady’s WheelHouse (Thursday Mid-City Market)
Locally sourced, homemade syrups on fluffy ice served from a fabulous truck parked on the Greenway.

Good Food Word of the Week:

While Market Umbrella is known for our farmers markets and fresh food access programs, food systems work touches on many social, economic, and environmental issues. The Good Food Word of the Week seeks to shed some light on these parts of our work and the way we talk – demystifying the jargon.

good food word

Farm to Table

This is the heart of farmers markets. The farm-to-table movement advocates for a diet that prioritizes local, fresh, and in-season food. Restaurants that promote a farm-to-table menu source their ingredients directly from farmers with an emphasis on serving food that’s locally and sustainably produced.

Vendor of the Week:

The Snoball Lady’s WheelHouse

Paulette, also referred to as “The Snoball Lady”, joined the market at the end of May, and we’re so glad that she did! A welcome addition to the Thursday Mid-City market, Paulette offers up an array of snoballs to choose from including more traditional flavors such as dreamsicle and wedding cake–sugar-free, clear, and cream options–as well as all-natural fresh fruit flavors made with ingredients sourced from the market! Paulette utilizes locally sourced ingredients to lovingly craft handmade syrups. Some of her natural flavors include Hibiscus Ginger Mint and Strawberry Cilantro Lime. A staff favorite is the Vietnamese Coffee Snoball, which is made with CCFM vendor Applied Arts Espresso! Be sure to treat yourself to something special and beat the heat with a fluffy, delicious snoball!

Recipe of the Week:

Spaghetti Squash 101

Winter squash... in the summer?! Don’t let the word “winter” fool you! Winter squash are called "winter squash" because they are harvested and consumed in the late summer and fall, but they have the ability to be stored through the winter months when stored in a cool, dry place. Spaghetti squash gets its name from the noodle texture it creates when scraped with a fork. Here’s a simple base recipe to kick off any spaghetti squash meal!
