Bucktown Hybrid Market | October 19, 2020

Fresh & Local:

Bucktown Hybrid Market

Another week, another innovation! Market Umbrella is pleased to announce a new market first! Starting this Wednesday, October 21st, from 8am to noon, the CCFM Bucktown Harbor Farmers Market will become a hybrid curbside and walkup market. This means that if you love ordering online and never getting out of your car to make your groceries, you will be able to park at the market and market staff will collect your orders and deliver them to the trunk of your car--100% no contact.

But, if you’ve been itching to browse in person, outside in the fresh air and sunlight, possibly the safest way to make groceries, you can do that, too. The “modified” walk up model will comply with the CDC recommendations for safe farmers market operations. CCFM will encourage contactless payment forms, enforce social distancing and limit crowd numbers. In accordance with the state mandate we will require masks be worn by all customers, vendors and staff, among other precautions. You’ll be able to make purchases at the market from a full lineup! Local growers and other vendors will be at Bucktown Harbor with an abundance of fresh produce (first of the season fall crops like satsumas, persimmons, leafy greens, radish and turnip), seafood, meat, dairy, bread and baked goods. The CCFM Bucktown Harbor is generously supported by the Office of Councilwoman Jennifer Van Vrancken. We hope to see you there!

This isn’t all we’ve got up our sleeves! The CCFM Bucktown Harbor Market will soon return to Friday evenings. Stay tuned for details!

Good Food Concept of the Week:

In addition to running farmers markets, a critical component of Market Umbrella’s work is to enhance food and nutrition access and awareness in our community. The Good Food Concept of the Week seeks to shed some light on this part of our work and also to demystify the jargon.

Grass-fed

This week’s Good Food Concept is Grass-fed – As defined by the USDA, grass-fed meat comes from livestock that has eaten only grasses throughout their lives since weaning, which is the natural diet for ruminants like cows, goats and sheep. While conventionally produced meat is typically fed corn or grain, grass-fed livestock is raised on pasture exclusively. Studies have shown many nutritional benefits of eating grass-fed meat, including a higher percentage of healthy fats. There are also environmental benefits to producing meat this way that include lower amounts of water and carbon inputs per calorie output than conventionally produced meat, not to mention the humaneness of treating animals in this fashion and letting them eat what their systems are built for. Luckily, the Crescent City Farmers Market is home to three anchor grass-fed ranchers: Our Family Farm, Gonsoulin Land & Cattle, and T&R Dairy Farm. Yee-Haw!

Market Mommas Club Box

Attention! Special Delivery!! It’s a box!! The Market Umbrella Market Mommas Club Box has arrived and is now available to order! Created to give busy MMC moms a convenient and contactless way to shop with CCFM vendors and use their food access incentive. The Market Mommas Club Box is a $40 value packed with great CCFM produce plus proteins and/or dairy! This box was made for Mommas but anyone can order. Visit TopBoxFoods as early as Tuesday mornings to see what’s in this week’s box and place your order.

Market Mommas Club was created in 2017 by Market Umbrella, with the generous support of the Kellogg Foundation, to support moms during their breastfeeding journey. MMC provides Louisiana families with increased access to fresh, local whole foods and connects moms to breastfeeding support groups. Enrollment is open to breastfeeding mothers or moms-to-be that are eligible to receive WIC who have not previously participated in the club.

Snacks in a SNAP

School’s back in session, and those little learning minds are always hungry for more! “Lettuce” help you navigate their mid-morning hunger pangs and that 3pm slump with these simple and healthy snack ideas made from fresh, seasonal ingredients available now at Crescent City Farmers Markets right now.

Persimmons - Fruit is perfect for a grab-and-go snack. But have you ever had a frozen persimmon? First, freeze the whole, ripe fruit. When ready to enjoy, allow the persimmon to thaw for 20 minutes. Then remove the top with a knife and dig in with your favorite ice cream spoon! This sweet and healthy treat is rich in fiber and antioxidants like Vitamin A, making it the perfect alternative to processed, sugary sweets.

Easy for little hands to peel, also great an alternative to processed juice and soda, satsuma agua frescas!

Kale - As temps cool, leafy greens make their way back to markets. Kale is a nutrition powerhouse, dense with many vitamins and minerals like Vitamin K, and calcium. So say kale yeah to kale chips, a crunchy and nutritious option to salty bagged snacks.

Getting kids in the kitchen and involved in preparing their food helps them build foundational cooking skills and confidence and kids can participate in making any of these snacks. Plus, they’ll taste more delicious when helpful youngsters can take pride in having done it themselves!

How to Shop Safely

Seasons Change

Summer softly fades
Bright hues dull to brown and orange
At last, it is fall!

Our Family Farm

Dan and Regina Wadsworth wanted one thing in life - to spend more time together and create the perfect farmstead. Almost a decade ago, their vision came to life on a little plot in Amite, Louisiana. Today, Our Family Farm sits upon 37 acres and is home to over 20 cows, 100 goats and lambs, seven faithful Great Pyrenees dogs, and a greenhouse housing over 30 different varieties of leafy greens. Like every family farm, the next generation is involved. Regina’s son Blake has been putting on his boots and learning the ropes. These days, you can find him at the Sunday Parkway Market with hydroponic lettuce, herbs, greens, and grass-fed lamb, goat, and beef. Our Family Farm is your family farm!
