Fresh & Local:

More Market Choices

Phase 3? Phase 3.3? What does this mean for your market experience? Well, it means that Market Umbrella is adding new and expanded safe opportunities to give our shoppers more choices for accessing fresh, local produce, meats, and dairy! This means that our vendors - small farmers, fishers, ranchers and purveyors of value add products - will have more opportunities for sales that will support their families. What’s new, you ask:

  • Home delivery - The CCFM box, provided by Top Box Foods, has returned to its regular season size. $40 gets you 8-12 select fresh produce items - plenty for a produce-loving family of four for a week. Reaping the best of the fall harvest, you’ll receive a rotating weekly lineup of fruit - currently citrus like satsumas, oranges, grapefruit and kumquats - and vegetables like broccoli, brussels sprouts, greens (salad and cooking), sweet potatoes, squash, and more. If you want to round out the options, or if you’re a Market Momma, consider the Market Momma’s Club box, which adds a cast of proteins, baked goods and dairy.
  • Hybrid markets - CCFM’s newest innovation provides you with multiple options for shopping at a single market. With the return of the Bucktown Farmers Market to Friday evenings, we’ve expanded that market to offer walk up sales in addition to curbside pickup for online pre-orders. More hybrid markets options are on the horizon! Stay tuned.
  • New markets - Everything old is new again! The Mid-City market on Thursday evenings will be returning in early December, but in a new location! You may have seen the construction at the Plaza on the Lafitte Greenway at the corner of Norman C. Francis Pkwy. and Lafitte Street. Well, that lovely new space is our future home. We are excited for the move, and will share details on the launch as construction progresses.

Good Food Concept of the Week:

In addition to running farmers markets, a critical component of Market Umbrella’s work is to enhance food and nutrition access and awareness in our community. The Good Food Concept of the Week seeks to shed some light on this part of our work and also to demystify the jargon.

Local/Community Food System

This week’s Good Food Concept is Local/Community Food System – A community food system, also known as a local food system, is a collaborative effort to integrate agricultural production with food distribution to enhance the economic, environmental, and social well-being of a particular place (i.e. a neighborhood, city, county or region). One of the primary assumptions underlying the sustainable diet concept is that foods are produced, processed, and distributed as locally as possible. This approach supports a food system that preserves local farmland and fosters community economic viability, requires less energy for transportation, and offers consumers the freshest foods. Farmers markets, like CCFM, are hubs of local/community food systems in that they match the supply (local and fresh produce and value added products) with demand (shoppers!), and contribute to the sustainable diet of the community.

Unlimited Market Match!

Through the end of 2020, Market Umbrella will be offering unlimited dollar-for-dollar Market Match for SNAP shoppers to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, thereby removing the signature program’s normal $20 daily limit. • Top Box Foods - on ALL SNAP eligible purchases, plus free home delivery
  • ReFresh Farmers Market on Monday evenings on the Lafitte Greenway
  • Stay tuned for new nutrition classes and programs supporting Market Match at Tulane’s Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine

Vendor of the Week:

Timmy Perilloux

Timmy Perilloux? You know the guy - the one with the big truck and even bigger veggies. Mr. Timmy hails from the good ole River Parishes in Montz, Louisiana, right outside of the Bonnet Carre Spillway, nestled in the land of rich alluvial soil across from the Mississippi River. His signature large and in charge produce - ten pound cabbages, massive cauliflower, broccoli, greens - are back in the home delivery boxes and now you can find Timmy at the Tuesday Uptown and Bucktown Harbor Hybrid Markets!

Recipe of the Week:

Harvest Salad

The folks over at Southern Living Magazine are on point with their salad game! This hearty Harvest Salad is ticking all our favorite flavor profile boxes for fall! A tangy orange vinaigrette compliments robust dino kale, roasty, toasty Brussels and toothsome and filling winter squash, the earthy crunch of pecans and crisp freshness of apples fall in line to round out this nutritional powerhouse salad. You can sub satsuma juice for orange and skip the maple syrup in the dressing, or roast the seeds from the squash as a crunchy topper. Plenty of ways to riff on this, with almost every ingredient currently available at market - just the way we like it.
