You Can Help Our Non-Profit Run Markets Thrive! | December 13, 2021

Fresh & Local:

You Can Help Our Non-Profit Run Markets Thrive!

This year has been another one for the books! Together, we raised over $120,000 to provide direct aid to over 40 Crescent City Farmers Market farmers, fishers, ranchers, and food producers to help them get back on their feet after the devastation of their farms, fields, boats, and equipment.

Your support helped to replant crops, rebuild greenhouses, reshore docks, and so much more! But now as farmers are planting seeds for the next harvest, a gift from YOU would help to plant the seeds to ensure that Market Umbrella has the critical resources needed to respond to new challenges and new opportunities in our local food system.

As a nonprofit organization, Market Umbrella depends on donations to help keep our markets open while also providing programs to mitigate the effects of increasing poverty and food insecurity in our community. As our local food system continues to navigate the ongoing effects and disruptions of a global pandemic and a changing climate, your support is needed now more than ever!

With this in mind, please take a moment and make an investment in the future of our local food system as well as the health and prosperity of our regional economy by texting CCFM to 44-321. Or give online today!

Picks of the Week:

Market Match $60 cap starting January 1

We believe farmers markets should benefit farmers, shoppers, and the wider community. Through the Market Match program, SNAP shoppers receive dollar-for dollar matches to purchase the best local produce available at our markets, Top Box Foods, River Queen Greens, and Grow Dat Youth Farm.

While this year the cap on Market Match was lifted, starting January 1, 2022 a $60 per visit cap is going into effect. This update will ensure that Market Umbrella is able to continue to offer robust support to SNAP shoppers (for example, up to $180 per shopper per week who attends all three Crescent City Farmers Markets), and that new partners can continue to be added to offer Market Match in more formats and at more locations. It helps ensure that the dollars we continue to raise year round to support Market Match, in conjunction with a Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program grant from the U. S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, will support the program for years to come.

If you have any questions about Market Match, please feel free to contact program manager Paige Guillory or visit our website.

Parking at Markets

Crescent City Farmers Market is excited to welcome visitors to our markets and wants to ensure that they are a safe and seamless experience for all involved including residents of the neighborhood. Visitors are encouraged to observe the parking options and restrictions surrounding each market, which for our Thursday Mid-City Market includes no parking on the uptown side of Lafitte Avenue and for our Sunday City Park Market includes no parking on Marconi Drive in areas with diagonal white parking lines. For our Tuesday Uptown Market, due to current construction, customers should enter the Tulane parking lot from Broadway (near the corner of Perrier).

Vendor of the Week:

Johndale Farm

She married into the farming industry, and now all these years later, Heather Robertson is the big boss in town. Johndale Farms started at five thousand plants and has now grown to over 160k, on the same land her father-in-law grew strawberries on as a boy. Currently the farm is twelve strong plus Heather, her four children, and her husband, who helps out when he can. They bring us five fun varieties of sweet strawbs: the Camino Real, San Andreas, Frontera, Radiant, and Heather’s personal favorite--the Festival. Smaller means sweeter, and Festivals pack a saccharine punch come spring. Right now you can enjoy the first Radiants of the winter season as Johndale’s will be at all three of our weekly markets. They also offer an array of produce such as beans and peas, mushrooms, cukes, and tomatoes.
