Fresh & Local:

Market on your Calendar

Despite the heat and rain, we’ve been growing a good time for National Farmers Market Week!

This year, we want to highlight that farmers markets don’t just happen on their own. Behind the scenes of every successful farmers market is a community working to make the market thrive. With the help of our vendors, visitors, and community partners, CCFM provides delicious local food, fosters community connectivity, and represents the resilience of the Greater New Orleans area. To help us celebrate everything–and everyone–that makes our markets great, mark your calendar for a week full of community, connectivity, and of course FOOD! Each of our Crescent City Farmers Market locations will feature a variety of activities for the whole family as a thank you to all that are connected to CCFM.

Below is a sneak peek of what's in store. Check out the Market Calendar for more details on all the planned activities.

Sunday, August 7th at City Park (8am to noon):
- Marketeers Monthly Meetup
- Newborn Baby Goats from Huckleberry Fred’s Creamery!

Picks of the Week:

Everyone’s Favorite Summer Fruit

As a member of the Cucurbitaceae plant family, watermelon is a close relative to cucumber, squash, and musk melon. So, think of this time of year at the market as a family reunion! While watermelon’s membership to the gourd family technically qualifies it as a vegetable, its refreshing, sweet, and juicy nature is what undoubtedly makes it a favorite fruit of so many! Now halfway through watermelon season, you can expect to find them at market through the rest of the summer. Stop by any market during Farmers Market Week (August 7th-13th) for a free watermelon tasting! Then grab a melon from our Mississippi-hailing vendors, Indian Springs Farmers Association, T&R Dairy, and Peeps Farm.

Become a Guest Vendor for Farmers Market Week!

Farmers markets don’t just happen–the community comes together to make them happen! To help us celebrate National Farmers Market Week, we are inviting food businesses in the community to host a pop-up as a guest vendor at any of our markets the week of August 7th. Guest vendors may sell prepared foods (hot to-go or take home and reheat) or value added products. If you or someone you know is interested in selling prepared foods, please fill out this interest form and email markets@marketumbrella.org if you have any questions.

Celebrate National Breastfeeding Awareness Month with CCFM!

August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, a month devoted to the protection, promotion, and advancement of equitable breastfeeding opportunities for families. Gaps in access to resources cause disparities for breastfeeding parents. We work to support all families by hosting programs such as Market Mommas Club and the WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program.

Market Mommas Club is our breastfeeding incentive program open to lactating parents who are eligible for Louisiana Medicaid and/or WIC. The club partners members with a breastfeeding peer support group and members receive token incentives each month, up to six months, which can be redeemed at any of our market locations.

WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program is an incentive program for WIC participants in which participating members receive a $28 food benefit. Members’ benefits can be spent directly in the market to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. When using FMNP benefits at CCFM, we’ll match your $28 dollar-for-dollar!

You can catch the next Market Mommas meet up and WIC FMNP card distribution in-market August 7, 2022 to kickoff National Farmers Market Week!

Vendor of the Week:

Cicada Calling Farm

With a bountiful display of bright bouquets, canned goods, melons, squash, eggplant, and more, you can’t miss the addition of Cicada Calling Farm to Thursday market! Run by Becks Hilliard & Sierra Torres, Cicada Calling is a 2-acre diversified vegetable and cut flower farm in Southeast Louisiana. As two young farmers from Louisiana, Becks & Sierra believe farming in the Gulf South is an act of resistance towards a disappearing community that has been ravaged by climate change and the petrochemical industry. Their beliefs are evident in their practice: they are a no-till, naturally grown farm and source a majority of their seed from cooperative seed growers in the South as a means of growing food better adapted to our climate and to increase the seed biodiversity of our region. For Becks & Sierra, Cicada Calling Farm is not just a business, but an intentional decision to invest in a future for Louisiana and create alternative economies, structures, and systems to support, heal, and nourish our community. Swing on by Thursday market and give a warm welcome to Cicada Calling!

Recipe of the Week:

Watermelon Gazpacho

Everyone is loving watermelon season, but these suckers are HUGE! Besides snacking on slices of watermelon on their own or in a salad, another cool, delicious use for some of that large melon now awaiting you in your fridge is to make gazpacho! This dish is perfect for dinners al fresco, and has just a little bit of kick from the jalapeno.
