Celebrating National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month | September 12, 2022

Fresh & Local:

Celebrating National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month

National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month marks celebration and recognition of the experience and meaningful contributions of Hispanic & Latinx people to this world. This month of celebration begins on September 15 and lasts until October 15.

There is such a rich history of Hispanic and Latinx people in New Orleans! As a port city, New Orleans has long been a site of trade with Latin America. Over the years, many people have migrated to New Orleans along these routes, bringing with them aquatic farming methods, polycultural crop-rearing, and many more agricultural practices that help us better protect and respond to the land and each other.

At Crescent City Farmers Market, we are celebrating National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month by recognizing and uplifting the Hispanic/Latinx people in our community. This month, make sure you stop by Isabel’s Tamales and Produce for some of the best tamales you can find, fresh chips, and delicious salsas. Swing by Amanda’s Frozen Fruit Bars for a sweet treat that beats the heat! And oh how we eagerly await the day B&G Foods returns to market with their mouth-watering desserts! While we wait, keep an eye out for new, edible additions coming to market within the next month

Picks of the Week:

New Merch, New You

Can’t get enough of us? We don’t blame you! This month, stop by a market Welcome Tent to pick up some new Crescent City Farmers Market merch, hot off the press!

We know that summer is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean the heat is! Get a brand new Crescent City Farmers Market tank top to show everyone else just how much you love shopping local. While you’re at it, get a bandana to keep the sweat off your head or to tie around your neck for a certain je ne sais quoi. Got your hands full at the market? Grab a small, canvas pouch so that you can handle even more wooden tokens––and by extension, delicious, fresh foods––with less of a hassle.

Double Your Summer P-EBT with Market Match!

Summer P-EBT provides food benefits to eligible K-12 students who receive free or reduced-price lunch and were in school May 2022. Each eligible child will receive a benefit of $391 issued in two installments, one for $195 and a second for $196 deposited onto P-EBT benefit cards that parents should already have from prior rounds. There is no action required for students: school systems will submit eligibility information and benefits are automatically issued to eligible families.

P-EBT cards will work just like any LA SNAP card and can be matched dollar for dollar at the CCFM markets or with any of our Market Match partners (Top Box Foods, River Queen Greens and Grow Dat Youth Farm). For every P-EBT dollar spent in any of these locations, we’ll match it with another dollar, cutting the customer price in half.

Isabel’s Tamales & Produce

Hailing from Independence, Louisiana, Isabel and the Mendez family grow a variety of produce on their farm, ranging from okra in the summertime to broccoli and cauliflower come winter. This time of year you can find peppers, muscadine, eggplant, tomatoes, and a variety of other in-season produce on their tables. In addition to her fresh produce, Isabel’s is also famously known for her freshly made tamales (veggie, cheese, jalapeño, and bean), available at Thursday market, and breakfast burritos, available at Tuesday and Sunday market. Her well-known tamales and burritos are best paired with her homemade tortilla chips and salsas. Come late September, Isabel’s will also be offering pupusas - a delicious Salvadoran street food made of a thick corn tortilla and stuffed with a savory filling! Isabel’s pupusas will be freshly cooked at market, filled with your choice of beans & cheese or spinach & cheese and served with curtido, Salvadoran cabbage slaw. Let the countdown to enjoying this delicious, savory dish at market begin!

Recipe of the Week:

Quick Arugula and Basil Pistou

What better way to welcome the arrival of greens at the market than a fresh, easy sauce that makes everything better? This week, we are enjoying the lesser-known cousin of pesto; pistou! Pistou is a little easier to make, too, as it does not require cheese or nuts. Put it in pasta, eat it on toast, mix it in a salad, use it as a marinade––there is no limit to ways you can enjoy pistou!

While most pistous are made using only basil, we have more than that at our markets! Now that leafy greens are finally back, we were excited to put as many as possible in this sauce. We found a mouth-watering recipe using arugula and basil. It could only get better with the addition of spicy microgreens from Know Dat Grow Dat!
