Keepin’ Crescent City Cool! | July 10, 2023

Fresh & Local:

Keepin’ Crescent City Cool!

Markets are hot in July; luckily, CCFM vendors have plenty to cool off with! On Thursdays and Sundays, Karen De Paz with Latino Snacks has the must-have treat of the summer: mangonadas! First she scoops mango italian ice into a cup, then adds slices of fresh mango, drizzles chamoy sauce and sprinkles the treat with tajin and chamoy, and garnishes with a Tamarrico stick made of tamarind, chamoy and tajin for a salty, spicy, and tangy snack to keep ya cool! MicroPharms’ owner, Chris Pham recently added a soft serve ice cream machine to his inventory, so stop by the Sunday or Thursday market to try some creamy ube or pandan yumminess! Treat yourself to a fresh fruit popsicle or ice-cold juice from Amanda’s Fresh Fruit Specialties at the Tuesday Market.

Iced beverages will keep you hydrated and replenish your sweat-depleted electrolytes. We are always in the mood for the rainbow of juice, tea, and fruit-muddled beverages available from Fresh Fruit Sensations. Stop at any market to try a probiotic lemonade or limeade, kombucha, or fresh squeezed juice from Gingerbooch. Put pep in your step with iced coffee at any of our markets from Applied Arts Coffee, Coffee Science NOLA, Riverboat Coffee Company and La Vie en Rose. Visit this link to see who is at market.

Farmers Market Week Announcement

Join Market Umbrella and the Crescent City Farmers Market as we celebrate National Farmers Market Week (NFMW) August 6 - 12! As members of the National Farmers Market Coalition, we get to participate in this national campaign, AND we can do what New Orleanians do best: celebrate! Farmers markets serve as community hubs that foster direct relationships between community members and farmers, which can create a more fair and sustainable food system. Farmers markets are hubs for connection and collective action around shared values. Visit the event calendar on our website to keep up to date on all Farmers Market Week events!

Moonlight Market Thank you:
Richard's Rainwater

Thank you to Richard’s Rainwater for their support of this year’s Moonlight Market fundraiser. Richards Rainwater captures rain from an infinite water source: the sky! They developed technology to capture rainwater at the cleanest point in the cycle at various collection sites, where rainfall is most abundant. Their closed-loop filtration is cleaner than the highest drinking water standards and purifies with virtually zero water wasted. The water is packaged into renewable glass bottles and aluminum cans for convenience. Guests of the Moonlight Market event in April enjoyed flavorful dishes from local chefs and washed it all down with a refreshing gulp of ice-cold Richard’s Rainwater.

vendor of the week

Vendor of the Week:

Black Creek Farm

Started by Mike Juneau and his wife Christina back in 2016, Black Creek is a small farm in Picayune, MS raising pork and beef. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Mike and his wife retired to Mississippi to start their own farm after feeling frustrated by the lack of transparency in the meat industry. Black Creek Farms brings GMO and antibiotic-free, pasture-raised, grass-fed beef and pork products, including various steaks and roasts, naturally cured (no salt or nitrates added) bacon (both pork and beef), MSG-free sausages. You can find them weekly at the Tuesday Uptown Market or every other Sunday at the City Park Market.

Recipe of the Week:

Beefy Tortellini Skillet

This Tortellini Skillet recipe from How Sweet Eats makes for an incredibly easy, delicious, and hearty weeknight dish! Grab some beef from Black Creek along with a bit of T&R Dairy’s fresh mozzarella and Costantini’s Marinara sauce to whip together this mouth-watering comfort meal. You can even throw in some chopped zucchini, fresh herbs, or other seasonal veggies if you’d like!
