GiveNOLA to Grow!GiveNOLA Day is quickly approaching - mark your calendars now for May 4, 2021 to make a gift that will help your markets and your community grow! On this day of online giving, an initiative of the Greater New Orleans Foundation, everyone who loves our region can join together to support their favorite causes by donating to local nonprofit organizations serving the New Orleans community. A gift to Market Umbrella on this special day will not only plant the seeds for the future and growth of the organization and the farmers, fishers, ranchers, and more that we represent, but also will allow us to continue offer programs like Market Match that doubles the buying power of vulnerable families in our community. |
Alliums and ScapesWe know it is spring when we welcome back to market in all their understated splendor, the alliums - the plant genus that includes onions and their piquant relatives chives, leeks, and garlic and all their accompanying foliage and blossoms. Favorites at this time of year include spring onions, the little golf-ball- sized fresh onions, just smaller less mature versions of a traditional bulb onion. The mild and versatile leek somehow collects and traps all that soil between its delicate layers, but we defeat it by chopping it first, then washing the cut pieces. And one should not overlook the delicacy of scapes - that connective shoot of onions, garlic or leeks that leads to the flower bulbs, and yields a tender green bean-like vegetable with subtle savory flavor. Use the flowers of any allium for lovely, edible garnish. Later on, garlic and onions will be cured and their familiar papery skins will protect them for storage through the year, but for now, we welcome back these fresh and vibrant essential ingredients. |
Vendor of the Week:Timmy PerillouxSpeaking of onions, y’all remember Timmy Perilloux? Our beloved St. Charles Parish farmer with the big truck and even bigger veggies hails from the good ole River Parishes in Montz, Louisiana, right outside of the Bonnet Carre Spillway, nestled in the land of rich alluvial soil across from the Mississippi River. If you are wondering why you haven’t seen Mr. Timmy at markets, it’s because he is a CCFM Box regular! Almost every week you can find his large veggies, including green onions, in the box! |
Recipes of the Week:Triple Threat Onion GaletteGarlic, scallions, and an onion bake together into a savory, cheesy filling that can be enjoyed any time of day. Scallions, aka green onions, aka Louisiana shallots have been front and center on local tables for the past few weeks. For this recipe, work fast with your fingertips and chill your bowl and spatula ahead of time to keep the butter cold and ensure a flaky, buttery crust. For an extra hand, the recipe link comes with in-text video guides to guarantee that your onions are jamming it up when you take that first bite. What’s your favorite dish to make after visiting the Crescent City Farmers Market? Share your recipes with us on Instagram or Facebook or even Twitter and it might be featured in our weekly newsletter! |
